Attention deficit hyperactivity and getting older

ADHD symptoms change with age. The symptoms do not usually increase. Symptoms, such as hyperactivity, may improve with age. Working memory and organisational skills may remain.

The reasons why ADHD symptoms may appear to worsen with age may be;

  1. Increased demands: With more demands on your time and attention, such as work, family, and social commitments.
  2. Other conditions: Other mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression.
  3. Changes in your brain, such as brain chemistry and maturity: Lower levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in attention and motivation.

With increasing demands and changes in your health how can you manage your ADHD?

  1. Organisation: Develop systems and stategies, a to-do list and diary.
  2. Goals: Be realistic, break down into small manageable tasks.
  3. Deadlines: Set realist deadlines.
  4. Breaks: Schedule regular breaks and take them!
  5. Help: Ask for this if needed.
