Celebrating International Women’s Day
Friday was International Women’s Day. This is celebrated annually on March 8th. It is dedicated to honouring the achievements and contributions of women. Celebrated globally and sometimes referring to significant achievements of women in history. It does serve as a reminder of the progress made in the pursuit of gender equality while highlighting the challenges that persist.
International Womens Day has been recognised since 1911. Women advocating for their rights, including the right to vote and improved working conditions. It has evolved into a global movement for gender equality. Despite the progress made, significant gender gaps remain. Women continue to face challenges in areas like equal pay, access to education, and freedom from violence.
The theme this year was “Inspire Inclusion” emphasising the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society, to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected.
Promotion of diversity in leadership and decision-making positions, women, especially those belonging to underrepresented groups, continue to face barriers when seeking leadership roles. By championing inclusion, organisations and communities benefit from diverse perspectives, leading to better decision-making and innovation. Intersectionality of gender and other aspects of identity, such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, and socioeconomic status is important for a diverse society. International Women’s Day calls for an inclusive approach that addresses the unique challenges faced by women with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Education and awareness are vital in fostering inclusion and empowering women.
