Stress
We are about to enter exam season and many students will be experiencing stress. Stress can improve performance, do not forget this.
However, signs of too much stress or unhelpful stress can lead to physical, psychological and behavioural symptoms. The physical symptoms include headaches, dizziness, muscle tension, muscle pain, stomach problems, chest pain, a faster heartbeat, and sexual problems. The psychological symptoms include difficulty concentrating, indecisiveness, feeling overwhelmed, persistent worrying, and forgetfulness. The behavioural symptoms include irritability, being “snappy”, excessive or too little sleep, eating too much or too little, avoidance, drinking more alcohol, and smoking more than usual.
There are activities and circumstances to review and change, if you can
- Be physically active, go for a walk, try some gentle stretches
- Take control, plan your work/revision timetable
- Connect with people, have some relaxation and company
- Me time, look after yourself, do not burden yourself with other unnecessary loads
- Challenge yourself, occupy yourself with something that takes your mind of things
- Avoid unhealthy habits
- Help others, the reward will hopefully reduce the symptoms of stress
- Work smart not harder, consider how you are learning, repeating and recalling information
- Positive thinking – YOU CAN DO THIS!
- Accept the things you cannot change
