Today is the last day of Mental Health Awareness Week 2024. The week is dedicated to raising awareness, breaking stigmas, and promoting better mental health for all. This year, the theme is all about movement: “Movement: Moving for our mental health.”
When we are active, our brains release endorphins, that can combat stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of depression. Physical activity can also improve sleep quality, which is crucial for mental clarity and emotional regulation.
Exercise is not just about building muscle or burning calories.
Why not, take a brisk walk or bike and explore your local area. Have your own kitchen disco. Sign up for a group fitness class. Try a new activity. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Park farther away from your destination and walk the extra distance.
Find someone to join you in your movement journey. Not only will you hold each other accountable, but social interaction is another key factor in promoting good mental health.
Mental health issues affect millions of people across the UK, yet many still struggle to discuss their experiences due to fear of judgment or misunderstanding. By raising awareness, we can create a more supportive environment where people feel comfortable seeking help and discussing their struggles.
Mental Health Awareness Week aims to increase understanding of mental health conditions, their signs, and how they can impact individuals differently, promote open dialogues about mental health, reduce the stigma, share information about where to find help, and highlight the importance of self-care and mental wellness practices.
What can you do?
Continue with the theme – Moving for Mental Health. Discuss your experience and leant about others, participate in events, support mental health charities and promote mental health and wellbeing.
Isolation and loneliness can significantly impact mental health, and having a strong support system can improve mental health.
